St. John’s Clean and Beautiful is seeking visual artists to design and create innovative painted art for traffic boxes. Selected artists will receive a $450 honorarium to cover artist fees, mileage and supplies. Paint supplies will be provided.
What is a traffic box?
Traffic boxes are the green metal boxes at intersections throughout the city. These boxes contain the controls that operate the traffic lights.
What is the Traffic Box Art Program?
This summer, St. John’s Clean and Beautiful will oversee a pilot project to engage local artists to design and create visual art (painting) on traffic boxes at several intersections throughout the city. (See below for a list of locations.) Artists are invited to submit proposals that should include 3 images of past painted work, an artist statement, a brief concept description along with a rough sketch and complete contact information (email address, phone number, mailing address).
A jury will select proposals that display ability with colour, design, technique and creativity. As well, concepts need to be clearly illustrated, original, respectful and suitable for a traffic box.
Artists may choose to develop a proposal for a specific box based on its location, keeping in mind any historical or cultural significance of the site or you may prefer to propose a design suitable for any of the eight locations.
We are very excited about this project and hope that it will be successful and continued in future years.
Why is Clean and Beautiful taking on this project?
The Traffic Box Art Program is an attempt to reduce graffiti on traffic boxes and to help make St. John’s more beautiful. The program also provides opportunities for artists to work on a different ‘canvas’ in the outdoors and to connect with the community. It is hoped that those who deface public property with graffiti will respect the work of artists and not tag the painted boxes. An anti-graffiti coating will be applied once the art work is completed and this should provide some UV protection and should be easy to clean.

How big are the traffic boxes?
The boxes are approximately 30 inches wide by 17 inches deep by 56 inches high.
